Road accident deaths in Oman down by 20.5 in 2013 NCSI


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Statistics released by the National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI) show that the number of road accidents decreased by 12.3 per cent in 2013 when compared to 2012.


It reflects the success of shared responsibility of public and private sector organisations in working together with all segments of society to reduce road accidents, following the directives of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said.


During 2013, the total number of road accidents stood at 7,201, making an average of 19.7 accidents for each day of the year. These resulted in 9,965 injuries and 905 fatalities. In 2012, the year-end figures reported 8,209 accidents, an average of 22.4 road accidents every day, which resulted in 11,618 injuries and 1,139 fatalities. When compared to the 2012 figures, the number of road accidents in Oman recorded a year-on-year decrease of 12.3 per cent, while injuries caused by road accidents witnessed a year-on-year drop of 14.2 per cent and the number of fatalities from road accidents recorded a decrease of 20.5 per cent when compared to the 2012 road toll.


Statistics also reveal that most road accidents victims are male, with 772 deaths for males compared to 133 deaths for females.


The number of Omanis who lost their lives due to road accidents in 2013 witnessed a decline of 21.4 per cent, with 596 fatalities recorded in 2013 against the 2012 figure of 758 fatalities. The declining trend was also evident in the expatriate population, which registered an 18.9 per cent drop in road accident deaths, with 309 fatalities recorded in 2013 against the 2012 figure of 381 fatalities.


During 2013, the number of Omanis who were injured in road accidents also registered a decline of 14.8 per cent, with 7,897 injuries recorded in 2013 against the 2012 figure of 9,273. The number of expatriates injured in road accidents also witnessed 11.8 per cent drop in 2013, with 2,068 injuries recorded in 2013 against the 2012 figure of 2,345.
