(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Five Omani photographers have won gold and silver for their entries at the Sharjah Arab Photography Competition, held at the American University of Sharjah earlier this month.
The five photographers, who are members of Oman Photography Club, won three gold and two silver. Mohammed bin Awadh Ba Omar was named Photographer of the Year and received a gold medal.
Majid bin Obaid al Ameri won gold for his photograph in the nature category, while the gold and silver in the people and portrait category were won by Yasser bin Nasser bin Abdullah al Farsi and Salem bin Ahmed Khalfan al Busaidi respectively. Hamad bin Saud bin Mohammed al Busaidi won silver in the macro category.
Ahmed Abdullah al Busaidi, supervisor, Oman Photography Club, said, ''It is a matter of pride for us. It shows that our members are going global. Every year we win awards. However, this is for the first time that as many as five of our members have won at an international event.''
Farsi, the gold winner in the people and portrait category, said, ''It is great to win at such a prestigious event. I am glad that Omani photographers have started receiving global recognition.'' Farsi said that things have changed a lot since he joined the club in 2008.
''Equipment such as tripods and filters that had to be imported from Europe and the US are now easily available in the country and the region. Earlier, we were hardly getting any exposure. But now, with support from the authorities, there are more opportunities to showcase our talent.''
