Book explores Oman's architectural heritage through 773 photographs


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman's Architectural Journey, a coffee-table book was launched under the auspices of H E Dr Rawiyah bint Saud al Busaidi, Minister of Higher Education on Tuesday. Authored by H E Mohammed al Zubair, the 477-page book has around 773 photographs and 16 hand-drawn sketches.


It takes the reader on a 5000-year pictorial voyage, starting with the nation's oldest structures. The book charts Oman's traditional, defensive, domestic, religious and contemporary architectures.


In his opening speech, Qusay Hasan Ali, advisor to H E Dr Rawiyah, said, ''The book has been authored by H E Zubair who is one of the pioneers of the art movement in the sultanate. His works have appeared in many publications around the world.


H E Zubair said, ''I, along with all those who have contributed to this work, hope it becomes another addition to the continuously growing Omani library and a reference for the next generations to know about the country's architecture through the centuries.


''This book will become a reference for engineers, students and researchers keen to explore the country's rich heritage.''


Muhanad bin Mahmoud al Hasani, manager of Bait al Zubair Museum, thanked H E Dr Rawiyah for his support.


Quoting from a statement by H H Sayyid Haitham bin Tariq al Said, Minister of Heritage and Culture, Hasani said, ''Oman's Architectural Journey documents the heritage and culture of the sultanate. It records different phases of the development of Omani architecture, covering thousands of years, from ancient times until the contemporary era.


''The author has covered historical and cultural aspects which are of significant importance to this country. He has introduced sites listed as a World Heritage by Unesco. He has also explained different architectural forms as well as the global importance of buildings such as the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and the Royal Opera House Muscat
