Philippine agricultural growth slows to 1.15 percent in 2013

(MENAFN) The Philippine agricultural growth last year slowed down to 1.15 percent, from 2.92 percent in the year before, Xinhua reported

The Department of Agriculture's Bureau of Agricultural Statistics said the crops subsector, which accounted for 51 percent of farm output in 2013, expanded by a mere 0.9 percent

The country aimed for 19 million metric tons (MMT) of unmilled rice production, but fell short at 18.44 MMT. On the other hand, rice production increased 2.26 percent from 2012

Corn production fell 0.4 percent to 7.37 MMT due to typhoon Rumbia and super typhoon Haiyan which hit farms in central and southern Philippines. Outputs of coconut, sugarcane, banana, coffee, and abaca last year were also lowered

The country's Agriculture Secretary said: "(This) reminds us how weather-dependent agriculture is, and therefore the need to promote and support diversification and value-adding in food processing is stronger than ever before.
