Most accidents in Umm Al Quwain caused by Emiratis

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) UAE nationals were held responsible for 1,439 of the 2,631 traffic accidents recorded on the roads of Umm Al Quwain.

Emirati motorists are to be blamed for some 55 per cent of the traffic accidents registered in the emirate of Umm Al Quwain last year

As per official statistics, UAE nationals were held responsible for 1,439 of the 2,631 traffic accidents recorded on the roads of the northern emirate

A senior officer here said most of the accidents in 2013 were rear collision, side crash and ramming into a fixed object on the road median or off the lane. Major Saeed Ibrahim Al Bairaq, Acting Director of the Traffic and Patrols Department in Umm Al Quwain, said Emiratis were responsible for 1,439 accidents last year

"Indian motorists, responsible for 650 accidents, came second, while Pakistani motorists, who were responsible for 542 accidents, came third," Major Bairaq said

Major Bairaq explained that motorists' failure to leave enough space between vehicles while driving was one of the main reasons behind the registered accidents

"Also, some motorists were careless and inattentive on the road while some others were not careful enough when reversing." The UAQ Police, intensifying traffic raids and patrols, issued 182,320 tickets in 2013

Meanwhile, official statistics show that traffic accidents involving rear collision came first, with 931 crashes, while side smashes came second with 842 incidents, and 750 accidents took place when vehicles hit against stationary articles on the road. "Ten people were killed while 100 others were injured in the accidents recorded last year." The UAQ Traffic and Patrol Department launched many campaigns all year round to develop awareness about traffic rules, curb violations and accidents and to enhance safe traffic flow

"Motorists are urged to abide by the set speed limit; always fasten seat belts, and be more cautious while on the road. Inspection raids are on to curb traffic violations, particularly those related to speed limit at all areas and regions of the emirate," he said

As per Article 03 of the federal traffic law, a driving licence shall be confiscated for three months for hitting or exceeding 24 black points for the first time. Should the same 24-black-point limit be broken again, the licence will be withdrawn for six months

A one-year confiscation of the licence is slapped in case of the third time break of the black point limit. The third time errant driver needs to pass a training course at an authorised driving school to restore the licence after one year.
