US Welcomes Syrian Opposition's Decision to Attend Peace Talks


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) US Secretary of State John Kerry has welcomed a decision by the Syrian National Coalition's to attend next week's peace talks in Switzerland and described it as "courageous" move.



The aim of the talks, to be held in Montreux, is to start the process of setting up a transitional government to end the war in Syri



The three-year conflict has claimed the lives of more than 100,000 peopl



An estimated two million people have fled the country and somSyrian National Coalition's e 6.5 million have been internally displace



Reacting to the SNC's Saturday decision in Istanbul, Turkey, Kerry said in a statement "This is a courageous vote in the interests of all the Syrian people who have suffered so horribly under the brutality of the Assad regime and a civil war without end." "By voting to go to Geneva II with a mission to negotiate an end to the war, the opposition has chosen a path that will ultimately lead to a better future for all Syrians," Kerry sai



"The United States will continue to support the Syrian opposition as they embark on the best opportunity to achieve a negotiated political transition as outlined in the Geneva communique," Kerry added
