Oman LNG and ESO sign pact on capacity building

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman LNG and the Environment Society of Oman (ESO) have signed a pivotal capacity building agreement that will see the sultanate's primary liquefied natural gas (LNG) company in support of ESO's aspirations to increase its environmental conservation outreach and effectiveness in Oman.

Oman LNG has committed some RO115,742 towards inducting young Omani graduates into all aspects of environmental management, expanding community outreach programmes, attracting more volunteer involvement in the non-profit organisation's multi-pronged initiatives and to increase and broaden ESO's projects' base to better understand and safeguard Oman's natural environment. Oman LNG had signed a similar agreement with ESO last year for the capacity building of young Omanis.

Oman LNG remains the first and largest funder of ESO's activities, investing first on its Say No to Plastic Bags campaign, carried out a few years ago. ''We are pleased to continue our partnership with ESO in their capacity building efforts. With ESO we have the excellent foundation in the efforts and programmes they have done in the previous years.

''This partnership will flourish the development of genuine and professional environmental capacity in Oman and significantly increase the contributions ESO will be making to addressing wider environmental challenges in Oman and finding and implementing solutions that will protect and preserve the natural environment for the future generation to enjoy,'' said Harib al Kitani, chief executive officer of Oman LNG, after the signing ceremony.

''We are grateful to Oman LNG for their continued support of ESO's capacity building programme. It is our duty to our country's natural heritage to train young Omanis in the field of nature conservation and our work gives our staff the opportunity to learn in a working environment. The training includes volunteer management, community outreach, fundraising, scientific field work, stakeholder engagement and education in the environmental field. We are very proud of our achievements last year and are excited to continue working on this programme,'' said H H Sayyida Tania bint Shabib al Said, president of ESO.

ESO's plans with this partnership range from shark monitoring off the Damaniyat islands on Batinah coast, working through Omani Women's Association (OWA) in various governorates to enhance engagement with local communities on environmental issues, to initiating nation- wide anti-littering and recycling campaigns across the sultanate. Oman LNG is a front-runner in championing environmental preservation initiatives in the country and through its business of producing and selling LNG, the world's cleanest fossil fuel provides many economies with an essential yet environmentallyclean source of energy for powering industries, heating homes, cooking and producing electricity, amongst other applications.

In 2004, the company provided some RO1mn towards the establishment of a Turtle Research Centre at the Ras al Jinz, a unique greenback turtle-breeding conservation reserve located near Sur that attracts thousands of visitors to the sultanate yearly. In an earlier partnership with ESO in 2008 Oman LNG funded the society's ‘Say No to Plastic (bags)' across Oman. Environmentally-friendly and reusable bags for Oman were also produced to drastically reduce the use of plastic bags in Oman, which are making detrimental impacts on the environment as well as threatening the lives of aquatic and terrestrial wildli
