18 Killed in Mumbai Stampede


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) At least 18 people were killed in a stampede ahead of the funeral for a Muslim religious leader in Mumbai on Saturday, reports said.



The stampede occurred early Saturday when thousands of people from the Dawoodi Bohra community gathered to mourn the demise of their spiritual leader, Mohammed Burhanuddin, the IANS news agency reported. Officials said 18 bodies were taken to two hospitals from the area where Burhanuddin's body was kept for people to pay their last respects. Twenty people who suffered injuries were discharged from hospital after treatment, while three had been admitted, the report said.



Dawoodi Bohra is a sect of Shia Muslims spread all over the world. Burhanuddin, spiritual head of the community, died of a heart attack Friday at the age of 102
