US stocks fall on weak company results


(MENAFN- AFP) US stocks Thursday finished mostly lower following disappointing results from a number of big companies, including Citigroup and Best Buy.At the closing bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 62.74 (0.38 percent) to 16,419.20.The broad-based S&P 500 fell 2.47 (0.13 percent) to 1,845.91, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index edged 3.80 (0.09 percent) higher to 4,218.69.Thursday's weekly jobless claims from the US Department of Labor fell to 326,000, while core inflation -- that without volatile energy and food prices -- rose just 0.1 percent in December."The economic figures were great, but we want to see it follow through in corporate results," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at BMO Private Bank."Right now investors are looking for a sunny side," Ablin said.
