(MENAFN - Arab News) King Abdul Aziz and his Companions Foundation for the Gifted and Creativity (Mawhiba) will be selecting the most qualified Saudi students in mathematics, physics and chemistry to represent the country in the upcoming international competition (Olympiad) to be held in South Africa, Kazakhstan and Vietnam in July this year.
According to Mawhiba, the international event is the largest and most important scientific competition in the world for students in public education.
The competition is organized annually and witnesses the participation of students from nearly 100 countries.
Some 130 Saudi students (girls and boys) will be participating in the national winter meet here in the capital.
Mawhiba and the Ministry of Education are organizing the event as part of the government's ambitious long-range plan to explore and discover local talent and transform the society into a knowledge-based community.
Saudi students have topped many international competitions in various fields, including science and innovation.
In 2012 the Kingdom topped the seven Arab countries that participated in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF -2012) held in Pittsburgh, obtaining about 60 percent of the awards won by the participating Arab countries.
The Society for Science and the Public's program is the world's largest international pre-college science competition and the premier global science competition for students in grades 912.
Saudi students also achieved their sixth straight win at the International Inventions, Innovations and Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2012), Malaysia, taking home five prizes.
In the field of science and innovation, Mawhiba announced recently that as many as 2072 projects relating to Saudi scientific research and innovation program have qualified for the Olympiad Innovation in 2014.
Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Quisani, head of the International Olympiad at Mawhiba, said that the winter meeting is the third in a series of annual meetings, which aims to train and select the national teams to represent Saudi Arabia for its participation in the Mathematics Olympiad in South Africa, physics in Kazakhstan and chemistry in Vietnam for the year 2014.
