(MENAFN - Arab News) Fatality rates arising from road accidents in the Kingdom increased by 24 percent in 2012 compared to 17 percent in 2009, a year prior to the application of "Saher" traffic system, local media reported, quoting data released by the Central Department of Statistics and Information (CDSI)

Makkah Region recorded the highest number of deaths and injuries, registering 25 percent and 27 percent respectively, whereas Riyadh accounted for the highest number of road accidents, estimated at 28 percent, according to the CDSI report

Overall, the number of road accidents increased by 22 percent in 2012, or 1,614 accidents per day, compared to 1,328 accidents per day in 2009- the year when Saher system was not adopted, a study prepaed by Al-Eqtisadiah daily said

Saher traffic system was first applied in April 2010 with the aim of controlling traffic movement electronically through a network of digital cameras linked to a traffic information center (TIC).

According to the study, the number of road accidents in cities and towns was five times higher than outside cities in 2012.

The number of deaths arising from road accidents Kingdom-wide reached 6,142 cases in 2009, then jumped to 6,596 in 2010, and reached 7,638 cases in 2012, which is a 24 percent increase since 2009.

Region-wise, Riyadh registered the highest number of road accidents in 2012 at 166,800 accidents, followed by Makkah at 134,700, and the Eastern Province at 116,000
