ABB to focus on growth, developing Omani talent


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) ABB LLC Oman, the local entity of the Switzerland-based ABB Group, a global leader in power and automation technologies, will focus on growth opportunities available in the Oman market as well as develop local talent.


At a media briefing held at its office in Muscat on Wednesday, the company highlighted its operations, projects, technologies, CSR initiatives in Oman and programmes to develop national talent.


Country manager Brian Hull said ABB will continue to invest and grow in Oman, which is a key market for the company.


He said, ''ABB started operations in Oman in 1995 with a project in the power sector. While electricity remains the biggest sector for us, we are increasingly operating in other sectors such as infrastructure, hotels and retail.''


''We hope to grow with the Oman economy. We expect 2014 to be a year of strong growth for us and that will continue in the coming years as we invest in high quality products and focus on developing local talent,'' Hull said.  


ABB had recently launched an internship programme for 2014 as part of efforts to support development of skills among local engineering students or fresh graduates from the universities in Oman.


''The programme will aim to provide opportunities to talent from the colleges and universities of Oman to gain valuable work experience and professional coaching early in their careers. We want to give young graduates a real taste of working life in the industry and private sector,'' Hull said.


He added that ABB plans to set up its Sohar office this year.


The internships will be for a period of three-six months, depending on assignment and availability of students and courses. Through the programme, Omani engineering students will be introduced to best practices and technologies in the fields of electrical and computer engineering used by ABB globally. The first internships to be launched will cover key areas such as project management, telecommunications, site commissioning and electrical design.
