(MENAFN - Arab News) Makkah police officers arrested a gang of thieves for breaking into parked cars near a sports stadium in Makkah on Tuesday evening.
The police suspect that the gang members, all Burmese nationals, specialize in theft from cars, particularly at stadiums.
Police recently received several complaints from sports lovers whose cars were broken into near stadiums during popular tournaments.
The police received nine such reports in a single night. A police source said the modus operandi of the gang was to look for a stadium where a popular match was being played. With one member acting as a lookout, they would break car windows and remove money, mobile phones, wallets and other valuables.
A special team caught the thieves red handed on Tuesday evening while they tried to break into a car. Police also seized 20 mobile phones and some money from the suspects, who were handed over to the Kaaki police station.
The special team was set up under the orders of Director of Makkah Police Maj. Gen. Assaf Al-Qurashi and the supervision of Director of Investigations Col. Muhammad Al-Wodhainani.
Spokesman of the Makkah Police Lt. Col. Abdul Mohsen Al-Maimani said the arrested culprits were being interrogated.
