UAE - Hefty fines imposed on 121 errant food, health establishments

(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) The municipality started imposing hefty fines of up to Dh200,000 on food related violations since May 2013.

The RAK Municipality caught 121 errant food and health institutions across the emirate in December

Khalifa Maktoum, Director of the Public Health Section, said inspectors last month visited 904 institutions specialised in preparing, selling and producing food, and providing health services

"Our inspectors confiscated and destroyed 13kg of expired and rotten food items.

The municipality will impose stringent penalties against errant institutions, spanning restaurants, cafeterias, supermarkets, groceries, patisseries, water desalination stations, cafes and butcheries, he said

"Ninety five of these were issued fines totalling Dh36,026, while 26 shops were issued warning letters, 23 were forced to sign undertakings not to repeat the same violations, and 57 trade licences proved to be illegal.

The municipality, earlier this month, nabbed six errant restaurants for flouting health and environment regulations in the first six days of the new year. "The outlets were found to be defrosting meat and chicken in an improper way.

The municipality started imposing hefty fines of up to Dh200,000 on food related violations since May 2013

"Though such a big fine was already stipulated in the food control law since 2009, the emirate has now starting imposing it.

The regular fines slapped earlier ranged between Dh20,000 and Dh30,000

"Now, the fines have been increased up to even ten times in case of hazardous violations related to public health. However, the fine is determined in line with the type and impact of the violation, " Maktoum said
