Oman starts with a bang

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Hosts Oman got off to a spectacular start in the inaugural AFC U22 Championship on Saturday night with a 4-0 rout of Myanmar in its Group A opener at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex.

Playing in front of a modest turnout, Frenchman Philippe Burle's team went into the break at 1-0 and came back onto the pitch recharged to pump in three more goals.

A hapless Myanmar outfit failed to put up a fight in the second half despite getting off to a fine start.

For Oman, the convincing win comes as a much-needed boost as it went into the tournament after enduring two dull, goalless draws at the recent WAFF Championship in Doha, Qatar.

Oman's senior team player Raeed Ibrahim drew first blood, scoring from a stinging left-footer in the 28th minute against the run of play after Myanmar showed a lot of enterprise and enthusiasm in the early stages of the first half.

Myanmar, however, failed to keep a check on the Omani attack in the second half, letting in the three goals in a span of just 16 minutes.

Sami al Hassani made it 2-0 for Oman in the 62nd minute.

Substitute attacking midfielder Hatem al Hamhami made it 3-0 in the 72nd minute - making his presence felt just two minutes after coming onto the pitch.

Hamhami then found his team's fourth goal - and a brace for himself - when he again found the target in the 78th minute.

Playing at home, the Oman players began a bit nervously and it was clear that the burden of expectations was weighing on them after the Myanmarese duo of Aung Thu and Kyaw Ko Ko sneaked into the rival goal area a few times and produced a scare of two.

But as the match progressed, the Omani players steadily found their rhythm, with attacking midfielder Ibrahim dominating the action.

Speaking to Muscat Daily after the match, Oman coach Burle said, ''It is a good win and we achieved our main goal of getting off to a winning start. We always knew that we could win, but in football, it is only when you achieve it that you believe it.

''It is good for the boys to come out victorious in front of a home crowd. The team was nervous at the start and allowed Myanmar to push hard. But once we got the opening goal, things were easier.''

Gerd Horst, the Myanmar coach, admitted that Oman was a superior side. ''We did not deserve to lose 0-4. But we were punished for our mistakes. My young team will learn a lesson from this match,'' the German said.

Earlier in a Group A game, South Korea and Jordan played out a 1-1 draw at the ROP Stadium to kick-start the tournament.

Also in a Group B game, North Korea eased to a 3-1 win over Yemen at the Seeb Sports Stadium.

Striker Jo Kwang scored a brace in North Korea's win, finding the net in the fourth and 56th minutes.

Pak Kwang Ryong was the other scorer for North Korea, putting the team ahead in 40th minute after Yemen's Sadam Hussein equalised in the 23rd minute.

Also, UAE and Syria played out 1-1 draw in the day's other Group B game at the Seeb Sports Stadium
