(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Recent studies by the National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI) reveal that Oman's population is approaching the 4mn mark, registering 3,957,040 by the end of December 2013.
Omanis comprise 56 per cent of the total population with 2,212,693, while 1,744,347 were recorded as expatriates, accounting for 44 per cent of the total population.
The Governorate of Muscat recorded the highest percentage of expatriates which stood at 61 per cent of the total population of the governorate, while Omanis comprised 39 per cent of the residents.
On the other hand, in Dakhliyah the percentage of Omanis was 77 per cent compared to 23 per cent expatriates.
Muscat, Dhofar and Buraimi recorded the highest percentage of expatriate population compared to citizens, while the percentage of Omanis is higher in Musandam, Dakhliyah, North and South Batinah, North and South Sharqiyah, Dhahirah and Al Wusta.
Meanwhile, the number of Omani births recorded in the period from January to November 2013 was 62,181 registering a growth of 1.9 per cent, when compared to the same period of 2012 when the number of births stood at 61,017.
Expatriate births in the sultanate during the same period for 2013 was 5,090 compared to 5,137 in 2012, showing decrease of 0.9 per cent.
According to the NCSI study, death statistics registered a decrease in the Omani population of 12.1 per cent, as the number of registered deaths was 5,278 from January to November 2013, compared to 6,007 in the same period of 2012.
Deaths amongst expatriates however, saw 8.3 per cent increase, recording 1,220 in 2013 compared to 1,126 in 2012.
