Three from Oman among 25 winners of Home Centre Room Makeover contest

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) A room makeover is not merely about changing the furniture and fixtures in a room – it is about redefining a living space. And, if the transformed room reflects the personality of its occupants, the change can work wonders for their overall well-being.

This year's edition of Home Centre Room Makeover Contest took on the challenge of recreating rooms to articulate the individual personalities of participants. The contest received an overwhelming response, both in terms of entries as well as the final voting for winners.

Judges faced the daunting challenge of whittling down the 37,000 plus submissions to a manageable 500 that factored in the personality traits of the contestants. The final 25 winning entries were chosen by a panel of in-house experts, of which three entries were picked by popular demand through voting that generated over 300,000 votes.

With the winners announced, the final phase of the Home Centre Room Makeover Contest involved an aggregate spending of AED250,000 on reinventing the living spaces of eight contestants each in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, and three winners each in Oman, Qatar and Kuwait. Each entry came with a unique story.

A young fashion enthusiast, blogger and singer from UAE was looking for a room that's not only made to sleep but one that stimulates her interests; a couple in Saudi who wanted to revive their compact living room that opens up to their kitchen to suit their lifestyle; and a homemaker from Qatar wanted her bedroom to reflect her calm and relaxed personality.

One of the winners from Oman was Omima Khamis, a young Omani girl who entered the contest for a reformation of their living room which was damaged during Cyclone Gonu and gift it to her house-proud mother. An Omani couple, the Al Mehrizis, won a makeover for their bedroom, while another Omani bachelor Hani Omar bin Awad from Salalah got his pad transformed into a chic New York style room fit for an urban youngster.

Omima Khamis

A loving daughter, Omima wanted to do something special for her house-proud mother by making her house look prettier. We decided to help Omima surprise her mother by re-decorating her living room that took quite a beating when Cyclone Gonu hit Oman. The main idea was to create a cosy, relaxed environment ideal for welcoming guests. We introduced our Juno sofas as the key furniture piece for the spacious room and teamed with our Olivia arm chairs, the dark wood Croco TV unit and Asher coffee tables to give the room a clutter-free appearance.

To this calm neutral base we added touches of teal with our Nailah filled cushions and Azzura tray. Hints of glass and metallics with our Naples vertical mirrors and Agata hanging lantern lent the room a hint of class. Warm lighting improved the coziness of the environment, which was given a fresh touch by using flowers and plants to decorate. The room was an instant success with the Khamis family.

Hani Omar bin Awad

When Hani requested a fun room that would reflect his personality, we decided on giving the young lad a modern city chic room with a masculine colour scheme. An industrial urban themed room was conceptualised for Hani. We used a two tone wall paint technique, with a lined drawing of a city skyline running across its width. The idea was to make the room visually attractive and striking from the first time it was viewed.

The Alabama bed collection, Ralf sofa set and Capresso study table made the perfect choices for this spacious room. To reinforce the theme, we used elements like a metal chain to hang a ceiling drop light instead of a table lamp, and installed desk lamps on the night stands. On seeing his room, an excited Hani said, ''This looks like Dubai!''

Suad Naser al Mehrizi

Suad wanted a visually appealing room that he could come back from work to and spend his time relaxing in with his family. We decided to capture his favourite things and add calming elements to his bedroom to give him the room of his dreams. We decided to incorporate a modern family-oriented, kitschy chic theme, with travel and exploration elements. We selected the modern Canova bedroom set for Suad which was laid out in an angled position giving Suad a peek of the beautiful view outside the window, directly from his bed. We also filled the place with various photo frames and wall art along with other statement furniture and accessories like our Bicycle Table Clock, Trilby and Kyla vases, Askew table lamp and the Carlos arm chair.

Expert stylists from Home Centre redesigned the rooms of the winners according to their tastes, attitudes and needs. Each makeover was completed in a single day. The Home Centre makeovers were accomplished using the latest range of products, integrating contemporary trends in interior design, keeping in mind maximum utilisation of space and functionality. All elements of fine interiors, from colours and lighting to furniture and accessories were stylised, providing the winning rooms with a fresh lease of life.

Aarti Jagtiani, general manager, Home Centre, said, ''By changing the contest mechanics to include a simple, personalitybased questionnaire the contestants had to fill in, we were able to engage more people and reach a larger cross-section of consumers in the region. The incredible response we received only reiterated the faith of our customers in our initiatives and products. Home Centre's vision has always been to transform houses into homes, and with this contest we get the opportunity to show how we breathe life into personal living spaces.''

In the three years since its inception, the popularity of the Home Centre Room Makeover Contest has grown exponentially in the region, both for the novelty of the concept and the opportunity it provides to ‘refresh' homes and lives. As the region's leading home retailer, Home Centre specialises in offering an interesting mix of the trendy and the traditional in furniture, furnishings, home accessories, kitchenware and gift optio
