(MENAFN - Arab News) Mohammed Khaleequr Rahman, a member of Andhra Pradesh Waqf Board Computerization and Digitization Project, said India had taken the Nitaqat law in the Kingdom as a positive move aimed at correcting the status of expatriates.

Rahman, who is in the Kingdom as a representative of the state government to look into problems faced by expats from the south Indian state, was speaking after holding a series of meetings with heads of community leaders at the Indian Consulate.

The meeting was part of an initiative of the state government to help Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in the Gulf states, particularly Saudi Arabia, and to understand the new labor law and try to resolve issues faced by Telugu expats.

Rahman highlighted the various NRI and welfare schemes launched by India for rehabilitation and betterment of NRI's and returnees following the crackdown against the undocumented workers in the Kingdom.
"I am here on an official mission on problems faced by NRIs post Nitaqat, and the issue should be taken as a humanitarian effort and not as any politically-motivated move," he said, adding: "Nitaqat would certainly eliminate middlemen, who were misguiding eligible job seekers for selfish gains. It will pave the way for fair and just agreement between the employee and the employer."

Rahman thanked the Indian Embassy and consulate officials for helping expats correct their status and for having organized job fairs.
He also thanked the community leaders, especially Aijaz Ahmed Khan, Chairman of United Andhra Pradesh Forum for the important role they played in highlighting the issues of expats
.
"The state government has set up an NRIs welfare fund and the fee collected from expats for attestation of documents and certificates is transferred to this fund. Presently, the government gets about Rs 10 million per year from this fee," he said.

Speaking about employment missions, Rahman informed the members that the Rajiv Yuva Karnalu (RYK) Scheme was aimed at creating around 1.5 million jobs in the private sector and around 100,000 jobs in government departments.

"This will be offered to skilled workers through the RYK scheme," he said.
The meeting also discussed various other issues including insufficient seats available for students in Indian International School, need for university education for women, rehabilitation and loan schemes for NRI's, life and medical insurance, setting up of NRI cell by the state government, exclusive NRI housing projects and weekly online interaction program to solve NRI's issues.
