(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) An illegal Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service is operating in the country under the name of omantel.
The service which is reportedly being operated from abroad has been operational for the past few months.
''You have to first install the application on the phone. Omantel's name flashes on the screen once you start the application. They are using the name of omantel to probably hoodwink the authorities or to win the trust of the customers,'' said a resident of Muscat who did not wish to be named.
''The service like any other VoIP service operational in the country can be used for making calls. The tariff for the service is the same as that of other VoIP operators in the market. There is also a similar illegal service named Arabia which is being operational,'' he added.
The service powered by 24Dialer can be downloaded for free over the Internet.
''You can download the application over the Internet if your phone supports the software,'' he added.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson of Omantel told Muscat Daily, ''We are looking into the issue and it will be dealt with. Omantel will take all possible measures to protect the interests of its customers
