(MENAFN- Arab Times) Deputy Prime Minister, the Interior Minister Sheikh Mohammad Al- Khalid Al-Sabah has suspended the decision to reduce the speed limit on highways as indicated earlier by the Assistant Undersecretary for Traffic Affairs Major General Abdul Fattah Al- Ali for purely technical reasons, reports Al-Rai daily quoting security sources. The same sources cited three reasons behind the suspension of the decision which was issued by the minister of interior, noting the decision to reduce speed limit aimed to solve traffic congestion. They also said the decision was not based on technical grounds or studies to guarantee it would overcome the problem of traffic congestion. "The minister acknowledges there is a problem and imbalance in the streets that actually leads to traffic jam and has nothing to do with speed limit; thus, he saw the need to hold back the decision".

Sources noted the minister has since recommended forming advisory bodies to present observations, in coordination with the Ministry of Public Works, Traffic sector and technicians conducting feasibility study in that regard before applying the decision. They said the decision has been suspended because it's neither logical nor reasonable in any way to reduce the speed on the Arabian Gulf Street from 80 kilometers per hour to 60 kilometers since the step will worsen congestion, and the same thing applies to Sheikh Zayed Road and Sixth Ring Road. Thirdly, the decision was suspended because it was issued out of the blue without prior media awareness campaign. Meanwhile, an Interior Ministry source disclosed that the ministry was not the only party concerned about imposing the decision to reduce speed from 120 to 100 km/h on some highways, reports Al-Anba daily.
Explained
The source explained that five governmental agencies and a sixth body affiliated to the United Nations participated in the study that lasted six months and had presented the recommendations to reduce speed. The source indicated the ministries of Interior and Public Works, Kuwait University, Kuwait Municipality and Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, in addition to specialists from the United Nations that included experts in traffic affairs participated in the study and concluded on reducing the speed limit.
