(MENAFN - Arab News) Visitors to Jeddah's spring festival spend an average of SR333 a day, one of the lowest amounts in comparison to similar festivals around the world.

This was revealed in a study carried out by the Tourism Information and Research Center (MAS) of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA).

Researchers spoke to 470 people at the Hayya Jeddah festival in 2013. They found that 21 percent came from Riyadh, 14 percent from Abha, and the rest from 46 different cities across the Kingdom.

Around 86 percent of the estimated one million people who visit Jeddah during the spring holiday come to the city with their families with only nine percent spending the vacation with friends.

Married people comprised 60 percent of visitors, with high school graduates 31 percent, university graduates 61 percent, and government workers 43 percent. A total of 76 percent came for general tourism while 13 percent came especially for the festival.

The average sy for visitors was four nights with 50 percent of them staying in furnished apartments, 19 percent in private residences and 18 percent in hotels. The visitors spent 42 percent on shopping, 20 percent on accommodation, 21 percent on entertainment and 14 percent on food and beverages.

According to MAS, 50 percent of the festival's visitors said that prices of services and goods were high while 42 percent considered them reasonable. A total of 64 percent of the respondents said Jeddah was an excellent tourism destination, 22 percent said the city was very good, and 91 percent said they would love to visit again. A total of 782,677 people visited the festival last year.

The Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced recently that the third edition of the month-long Hayya Jeddah festival in 2014 will be launched on Jan. 10, with an expected SR2 million to be spent by 1 million visitors on gifts and other goods. Around 5,000 outlets, shops and malls will participate in the festival.
