(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) An Arab national was found dead in a sandy area in Al Warqa and a few others sustained serious to moderate injuries in traffic accidents on New Year's eve according to Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zafin, Director of the General Department of Traffic of the Dubai Police
A restaurant was gutted and a few cars were burnt in the accident. He added that though a very large number of people had gathered to watch the fireworks, the police had managed to control the crowds.
Al Zafin pointed out that there was a bit of confusion after the fireworks when most of the people rushed to get to their cars at the same time. Also, some youth had misbehaved and had resorted to racing in Al Warqa area leading to the death of the Arab man.
Al Zafin said the body of the Arab man was found in the sandy area in Al Warqa and the case was referred to the police station. He said the police received information that a man was found lying in the sandy area. A police patrol rushed to the site and according to a friend of the man, he fell out of the window of the speeding car from which he was hanging out. The case was, however, referred to the police because of conflicting reports.
In another case, a mother and two children, UAE nationals, were seriously injured after the car in which they were travelling and driven by an Asian overturned on Al Aweer road.
In yet another case, a European allegedly committed suicide after a dispute with his wife.
Brigadier Omer Al Shamsi, Director of the command room of the Dubai Police, said 100 employees were at work to receive calls during the celebration. He said they received a large number of calls and most of them were about traffic congestion and difficulties people were facing to reach celebration areas, especially Palm Jumeirah.
He added that people had started to reach the location by 2pm
