(MENAFN - Arab News) Jeddah's streets will soon have new names. Al-Sufun (Ships Roundabout), Darrajah (Bicycle Roundabout) and Tayara (Airplane Roundabout) will be among the squares changing their names as part of new development and traffic projects in the city.
The Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs notified municipalities to review street names and replace those that do not suit the local culture and traditions.
Citizens' complaints led the ministry to launch the renaming process. The ministry called on residents to continue sending in their feedback as part of its social partnership with citizens.
The ministry established naming and numbering departments at municipalities almost 29 years ago to rename streets based on a list prepared by academics, historians and writers. These departments will provide regional governors with the new street names.
The ministry has launched a website where municipalities can participate in the process. In Makkah, a new system is in place to rename several districts and neighborhoods after historic events or figures.
