(MENAFN - Arab News) The Riyadh Traffic Department has launched a campaign to clear streets and public areas of parked rental cars.
"Violators will be subjected to heavy penalties," said Col. Ali Al-Dabeikhi, Riyadh traffic police director. Violating cars will be confiscated, fined and the names of the violating rental offices will be given to the Ministry of Transport.
The campaign is carried out with the participation of representatives from the ministry.
He said owners of car rental agencies should abide by the rules and regulations of the ministry, which stipulates that any car rental agency will not be given a permit unless it owns a yard to park cars. Offices are only allowed to park their cars in front of the office.
Al-Dabeikhi added that penalties have been imposed on violators for parking their cars in public facilities and gardens.
He said the campaign is being conducted in all Riyadh neighborhoods to increase the level of traffic control and enhance the safety of pedestrians. He stressed that no violation will be exempted.
He added that traffic teams will apply all regulations that guarantee the safety of drivers and pedestrians, like speeding in areas not covered by Saher cameras, passing red lights, using a mobile phone while driving, not fastening the seatbelt, in addition to parking in restricted areas, in order to ease traffic flow.
He said that traffic police has also implemented a traffic campaign against violating motorists using bikes, including delivery bikes. Bikes of violating motorists are confiscated.
Recent statistics show that 2,400 motorbikes were confiscated last year, and the number of impounded bikes during November and December reached 150. The number of bikes released after correcting their status was 450. Violations varied between missing number plates, not wearing a helmet, no proof of ownership, and annoyance in addition to random parking or riding in convoys, or renting bikes in Al-Thammah.
