(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) A five-day handicraft exhibition, ‘Tuhfah', opened at the Opera Galleria on Sunday under the patronage of H H Sayyida Dr Muna bint Fahd al Said, assistant vice chancellor for external cooperation at Sultan Qaboos University.
''Celebrating culture through art has always been an integral part of our history. The exhibition is not just about handicraft, it is also about us and our heritage,'' said Sayyida Dr Muna.
‘Tuhfah', which means an exquisite art piece, features works by seven artisans: Safiya al Ghafriya, Ahmed al Shubaibi, Salim al Uwaisi, Faisal al Abri, Saeed al Mujaini, Sameera al Yaqoubiya and Hiyam al Harthiya. It is being organised as part of Oman Oil Company's (OOC) corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.
''This exhibition marks the culmination of a successful year of CSR programmes. The initiative supports those who play a pivotal role in shaping Oman's handicraft industry,'' said Mulham al Jarf, deputy CEO of OOC.
Abri, an artisan from Sohar who makes ‘pottery paintings' said, ''I have used three kinds of clay - green, white and red - to make these pottery paintings. I focused a lot on the technique and would like them to be seen by people. The 12 pieces of work that are displayed here have been made over a period of three months. This is the second exhibition I am participating in.''
Sameera, a jewellery designer, has 42 ornaments in silver and brass on display. ''It took me four months to make them. The designs have both Arabic and modern elements.''
