(MENAFN - Arab News) An expatriate claiming to be a dentist set up a fake makeshift clinic inside his house in south Jeddah, where he plies his trade for extremely low prices.

The "dentist" was simply identified as Ridah by a local newspaper. He agreed to meet the newspaper's reporter at a location other than his home after numerous phone calls and refused to divulge information on his bogus clinic.

Ridah is in his 30s and wears a white physician's coat. After the meeting, the reporter and the "dentist" made their way up a dilapidated staircase and entered a tiny room, which appeared to be a bedroom.

Rida then conducted a medical exam and said he would fit platinum caps on three teeth for SR450. This would be done in a single session. Hygiene standards at the "clinic" were appalling.

Ridah did work on a 65-year-old man, who then took issue with him because dentures installed were uneven.

Photos of Ridah's clinic were shown to Ahmad Mizan, a dentist at one of the medical centers in Jeddah. He said: "Patients visiting this site will be infected because there is no sterilization. Any doctor should be qualified to deal with complications, such as infection or bleeding, which are non-existent in this case," he said. "Patients should make sure they visit only certified doctors."

In a statement last week, the Ministry of Health warned citizens and residents against dealing with illegal practitioners who carry out medical routines at their homes or on unlicensed premises. It called on residents to report violations, whether committed by establishments or practitioners, through the ministry's website.

The ministry has admitted to the ever-spreading phenomenon of uncertified practitioners. Ali Al-Zawawi of the Health Ministry said that the government was well-aware of this growing tend.
