SPAR to open 9 supermarkets in Oman by 2016

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) As part of its expansion in the Middle East, SPAR International, the world's largest food-store retailer, will open nine supermarkets in Oman by the end of 2016, with three set to open in 2014.

SPAR expanded its network of partners in the MENA region by signing a new licence agreement with Khimji Ramdas on Monday, under which the Omani firm will add SPAR to its portfolio of global brands.

SPAR is looking to develop its brand throughout the Middle East in a co-operative venture with the Abu Dhabi Co-operative Society (ADCOOPS).

At the signing ceremony on Monday, Dr Gordon Campbell, managing director of SPAR International, said the retailer is targeting the Middle East for growth in 2014.

He said, ''We are delighted to add Khimji Ramdas to our network of prestigious partners in the Middle East. With the combined knowledge and support of SPAR, ADCOOPS and Khimji Ramdas, SPAR will expand rapidly in Oman.''

Dr Campbell said that in Oman SPAR will open three supermarkets next year, with the first store to be opened in the second quarter of 2014.

Georges Mojica, general manager of ADCOOPS, said, ''We will target nine SPAR supermarkets with 10,000sq m sales area in Oman before the end of 2016. The stores will provide high quality fresh foods combined with a wide selection of products, excellent service and good value. They will be a new benchmark for supermarket shopping in Oman.''

Speaking on the occasion, Nailesh Khimji, director of Khimji Ramdas, said, ''SPAR as a brand has best global practices and strong positioning. Khimji's Mart, the retail arm of Khimji Ramdas, being the largest chain of supermarkets in Oman with a strong retailing experience of over two decades fits in as the right partner for SPAR in Oman.''

''We will endeavour to deliver superior products and service to our shoppers across the country. While delighting shoppers with our design, layout and offerings will be our aim, we will continue to work closely with our valued suppliers to bring this to reality,'' said M Sridhar, CEO, consumer products group, Khimji Ramd
