Oman's first mobile library to be launched today

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The Dar al Atta'a Let's Read Committee had announced the launch of Maktabati, Oman's first mobile library. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, the new mobile library, Maktabati, will tour the country giving children greater access to good books and an opportunity to develop the love of reading.

Maktabati will be based at the Public Knowledge Library in Qurm and the bus will visit schools and public places on a regular basis. The generosity of the community has made this exciting, new mobile library project possible. The organisation is extremely grateful to the following companies and women's groups for their support of Maktabati – The Women's Guild of Oman, Dhofar Insurance, Al Busaidy, Mansoor Jamal &Co, Barrister & Legal Consultants, the Public Knowledge Library, Oman Air, Daub LLC, Sweets of Oman, Oman Insecticides and Air Fresheners Co, the American Women's Guild and Mommy and Me.

Our charitable organisation, Dar Al Atta'a, was established in 2002 and, to date, it has helped improve the lives of 50,000 people through its various outreach programmes. The Let's Read Campaign began in 2007 and is committed to promoting the love of reading to children in Oman. Our message is that reading is a key to qualifications and a bright future.

Reading changes lives, improves employability, broadens minds, develops the imagination and increases empathy and understanding for others. Albert Einstein once said; "If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales." He understood the value of reading, and of imagining. The Let's Read Committee achieves its aims in a variety of ways. A press release said, ''We set up play rooms, libraries and reading areas in hospitals, schools and nurseries. Each month we collect used books and hold sales at the Al Qurum Complex.

We conduct storytelling sessions in schools and buy books and distribute them to children in the outlying areas. Every year we hold a Big Book Day with literacy activities and story-telling sessions. Our annual Children's Writing Competition attracts hundreds of entries from all over the country. Many winning entries have been published. Mazoon Publishing has generously sponsored the publication of two Let's Read books Tales with a Twist and Stories from Oman are on sale in all good book shops.

Funds are still needed to sustain the mobile library project and we invite companies and individuals to get involved in this worthwhile cause by pledging funds for us to purchase books to stock Maktabati. We will then be able to provide children with a continuous supply of good books. Volunteers are also needed to help us with our projects and activities.''
