(MENAFN- AFP) Hollywood power players Bob and Harvey Weinstein are reuniting with Miramax, the company they founded in 1979 but sold to Disney, in a joint production and distribution deal, they announced.
The multi-year deal will include film, television and live stage projects based on hit Miramax films like "Shakespeare in Love" and "Swingers," as well as TV series based on titles such as "Good Will Hunting."
Films created under the partnership will be released in the United States by The Weinstein Company (TWC) and sold internationally by Miramax, the two companies said. The first productions will start in early to mid-2014.
"This is an amazing opportunity to reunite us with the company named after our parents Miriam and Max," said the brothers, whose films have won more than 70 Oscars over their time with Miramax and TWC.
The Weinsteins sold Miramax to Disney in 1993 but continued to manage it until 2005, when they formed The Weinstein Company, behind Oscar winners including 2010's best picture "The King's Speech."
Disney sold the company in 2010 to a group including Qatar Holding and Colony Capital.
"Reuniting Harvey and Bob with the acres of cinematic diamonds that is the Miramax library, and combining the two companies' powerful distribution capabilities, will create an unparalleled partnership in cinematic excellence," said Miramax chairman Thomas J. Barrack.
The Weinsteins added: "We salute Qatar Holding and Tom Barrack of Colony Capital ... From movies to TV shows to the Broadway stage they have reinvigorated Miramax productions and to have the Miramax banner fly once again is a dream come true for all of us."
Their mother Miriam added, in a company statement: "Over the years Bob and Harvey have never let me talk although I would have done better than them, after all I am a Jewish mother.
"I want to thank Tom Barrack, Colony Capital, and Qatar Holding for bringing Miramax actively back into my life and making a dream come true.
"No one would be happier than Harvey and Bob's late father, Max. This is truly a lucky partnership for all involved, for filmmakers and hopefully lucky for filmgoers all over the world."
