Sentence of Oman's Shura Council memberreduced

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat Court of Appeals on Monday sentenced Dr Talib al Mamari, Shura Council member from Liwa, to four years in jail and imposed a fine of RO500 on him in a ruling related to a protest that was held there this year.

The verdict modified a ruling by Muscat Primary Court on October 10 that had sentenced him to seven years in jail, apart from the fine.

Dr Mamari had been detained on various charges, including one of inciting the protest on August 22 against alleged air-pollution from Sohar Industrial Port.

The court also sentenced six other defendants - including Saqr Mohammed al Balushi, a Liwa Municipal Council member - to one year in jail and acquitted the three other defendants.

The verdict was pronounced by Sheikh al Mukhtar Abdullah Issa al Harthi, chairman of the appealing body of the case.
