(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) As many as 100 university students aged between 18 and 24 years, led by industry experts, have taken up challenges themed around Duqm at the Muscat Youth Summit 2013 (MYS) which began on Saturday.
The students divided into eight groups, have been given four days to finish the tasks and make a presentation to a panel of judges.
The tasks are: marketing campaigns for Duqm port and Oman Drydock Company, exploring the potential for low-cost and eco-friendly houses for families, making a promotional film for the Special Economic Zone Authority Duqm, re-thinking the city's transport, developing community literacy and social programmes, planning an annual Duqm fish festival and bringing out a dedicated MYS magazine.
H H Sayyid Faisal bin Turki al Said, chairman of MYS said, ''This is the first time Duqm has been chosen as a destination for MYS. It is also the first time where the projects discussed at the summit reflect the venue.
''MYS is all about capacity building and providing young people with an opportunity to learn about a variety of issues, ranging from industrial development to social media.''
Organisers said that by 2030, 60 per cent of the world's population will live in cities, and that Duqm needs a metropolitan transport system
The Salalah Group, has been tasked with developing a transport system for Duqm. Abbas Hussain al Essa, a member of this group and a College of Banking and Financial Studies (CBFS) student said, ''The idea is to develop a transport system that will reduce the number of cars on roads and give impetus to public transport. We hope to come up with a good solution. This is my first time at MYS and we want our ideas to be acknowledged.''
Ghazi al Balushi, from the Sur Group and also a CBFS student said, ''We were asked to set up a community family resource and computer literacy centre to teach entrepreneurship and job skills. This is a great experience.''
Siham Jasnak, a student from Sultan Qaboos University and part of the Shinas Group said, ''We have had discussions on the power of media and how it can be a key to success. We have been asked to create a web version of the magazine. I am responsible for its design.
MYS is being organised by the Public Authority for Investment Promotion and Export Development and will run till Thursday.&nb
