US cruiser performs 2,000th chopper landing of 2013 in the Sea of Oman

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg successfully performed its 2,000th helicopter landing of the year earlier this month while operating in the Sea of Oman in support of the US-led military mission in Afghanistan, according to a US Navy 5th Fleet release.

An embarked helicopter assigned to Helicopter Maritime Strike (HSM-74) Squadron 74 Detachment 2, made the landing on the flight deck of USS Gettysburg as part of routine operations. Helicopters embarked on USS Gettysburg are used to support medical evacuations, search and rescue operations, vertical replenishments, personnel transfers and maritime security operations.

''This milestone is truly a team effort. We are all constantly training to ensure the highest level of safety in our support of missions within the strike group,'' said Lt John Briley, one of six embarked pilots aboard USS Gettysburg.

USS Gettysburg is currently deployed as part of the USS Harry S Truman Carrier Strike Group supporting maritime security operations and theatre security efforts in the US Fifth Fleet area of responsibility.
