Malaysia Urges UN Members to Enhance Contributions to UNRWA

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Malaysia has appealed to United Nations (UN) members to enhance their contributions to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) as it is crucial to the well-being of Palestine refugees. Malaysia's Permanent Representative to the UN Hussein Haniff said Kuala Lumpur was concerned over a reported budget shortfall of US$353.3 million about (RM1.1 billion) as it had adversely affected the agency's operations, according to Malaysia's (Bernama) News Agency. "A regular UNRWA budget is crucial to enable the agency to implement its activities effectively," he said in a statement on Agenda Item 70 which touched on strengthening coordination of humanitarian and disaster relief assistance of the UN, at the UN General Assembly in New York. Hussein pointed out that Malaysia had always been a strong supporter of the Palestinian cause, contributing US$1.2 million about (RM3.8 million) last year to UNRWA in response to the agency's appeal. It pledged a contribution of US$250,000 (RM800,000) to UNRWA this year.
