Oman rallies to victory against Maldives

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman's U19 team put up a remarkable turnaround performance in its second game at the ACC U19 Challenge Cup on Tuesday, sealing a 68-run win against Maldives at the AIT ground in Bangkok, Thailand.

It was Oman's second consecutive win in the event following its 254-run victory against Myanmar in the opening clash.

The Oman boys had crashed to 45 for seven after choosing to bat first upon winning the toss in the Group B game.

However, its middle-order batsmen resurrected the innings and later on, the Oman bowlers broke the back of the Maldives batting line-up.

Akshay Jathar (35) and Waseem al Balushi (34) rescued the Oman innings to help the sultanate put up 141 on the board in 43.1 overs after Maldives' Mohammed Saafee (4-17) and Mohammed Mabrook (3-14) dealt crucial blows with the new ball.

Jathar hung around to face 96 balls during his crucial knock, while Waseem batted for 40 deliveries, frustrating the Maldives bowlers.

After the break, Maldives couldn't make a match of what had appeared to be a modest run chase, folding up for a paltry 73 in 27.2 overs. Saafee top-scored with 37, while Oman's Waseem Ali (4-11) did most of the damage with the ball.

Oman attacked its opponent well during chase, packing the close-in field with fielders crowding around the bat.

Barring a patient Saafee, who turned out to be the only Maldives batsman to display composure, the rest of the batsmen succumbed to the relentless pressure applied by the Omani bowling attack.

Oman's disciplined bowling turned out to be a key difference between the two sides as Maldives ended up giving away 29 extras in contrast to its opponent's 12.

Brief scores: Oman 141 in 43.1 overs (Akshay Jathar 35, Waseem al Balushi 34; Mohammed Saafee 4-17, Mohammed Mabrook 3-14) beat Maldives 73 in 27.2 overs (Saafee 37; Waseem Ali 4-11).
