(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) A seminar on the 'Role of Produced Water in Sustainable Development Plans' concluded at Crowne Plaza Hotel in the wilayat of Duqm on Tuesday, under the auspices of Eng Zahir bin Khalid al Sulaimani, chairman of the Oman Water Society (OWS).
The seminar recommended consolidation of efforts between governmental institutions and companies under one umbrella by creating a national centre or an entity and allocating it necessary resources to support researchers and specialists in the area of water associated with oil sector.
Speaking on the occasion, Eng Sulaimani said that among other recommendations of the seminar included the need for an international conference on accompanying water from the oil reservoir. ''The sultanate extracts ten barrels of water for every barrel of oil extracted. This costs a lot and causes a lot of challenges for companies involved in oil extraction.''
The seminar aimed at highlighting the quantity and quality of produced water associated with oil, assessing the possibility of using this water as an unconventional source of water that can be used for industrial and agricultural purposes.
It also discussed the role of oil in sustainable development plans for the region and highlighted the water situation in the Al Wusta governorate and its surrounding areas.
The seminar was attended by H E Sheikh Meadhad bin Mohammed al Yaqoubi, governor of Al Wusta, Walis, members of the Majlis A'Shura, representatives of the governorate's wilayats, experts, researchers and academics in the fields of oil, gas and water
