(MENAFN - Arab News) Indian Consul General Faiz Ahmad Kidwai will hold a meeting of volunteers and community members at 4:30 p.m. at the consulate premises on Tuesday, Dec. 10, to brief them about the latest developments and guidelines in the post-amnesty period and the assistance being provided by the consulate to Indian nationals in this regard, according to Dr. Irshad Ahmad, consul, press, information and culture.
Ahmad said the volunteers and community members will also be briefed on the 12th edition of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) convention to be held in New Delhi from Jan. 7-9, 2014. Organized by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, the convention will be attended by a large number of delegates from across the world. He said non-resident Indians (NRIs) will be encouraged to articipate in the three-day event.
Ahmad explained that Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is celebrated on Jan. 9 every year to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community in the development of India. It was on Jan. 9, 1915, that independence hero M.K. Gandhi returned to India from South Africa to lead India's freedom struggle.
He said that PBD conventions are being held every year since 2003. During the event, individuals of exceptional merit are honored with the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award in appreciation of their role in India's growth.
The event is intended to strengthen engagement of overseas Indians with India's growth, and provide a platform to network and exchange views and perspectives; to enhance linkages and synergies for economic, social and cultural development.
