(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) Peter Seidenberg, the 76 year old American who has been part of the Laser Masters Championships since it was launched in 1980, defeated his long-time rival Keith Wilkins of Britain for the first time to take the coveted Radial Great Grand Masters title in Musannah on Saturday.

With steady winds blowing throughout the day, Seidenberg sealed his win by finishing second in both of his final two races.

''It's my ninth championship win, but this one is particularly sweet because I have never beaten Keith in the past,'' said Seidenberg. ''We have sailed against each other in the Grand Masters division and he has always beaten me. After I won a few championships and moved up to the Great Grand Masters, he joined me there, too, and beat me. But today, I was able to take revenge.''

Earlier, Jon Emmett played it safe in Radial Apprentice class to secure the first Masters win of his career. He took a third and fourth in the two races of the day, which were enough for him to finish on top.

Emmett said, ''I could have been a bit more aggressive, but I played it safe in the last two races. I am really pleased with the results.''

In Standard Masters, the battle between Canadian Al Clark and Arnoud Hummel of The Netherlands went down to the wire. It was Clark who emerged victorious after finishing just a point ahead of his rival in the overall tally.

Mark Bethwaite of Australia took top honours in Standard Great Grand Masters with a stunning scoreline of nine outright wins in ten races.

In Standard Grand Masters, Greg Adams of Australia was crowned champion after dominating the fleet all week. He finished the final race in second place behind Terry Scutcher of Britain, but his overall lead over Scutcher was a solid nine points.

Absent from racing on the final day was Britain's Ian Jones, who won the Radial Apprentice class on Friday with a day to spare.

In Standard Apprentice, Scott Leith of New Zealand took the title, while in Radial Grand Masters, Aussie woman sailor Vanessa Dudley edged out American Bruce Martinson for the title.

Seidenberg and the other winners received their awards from H E Rashad al Hinai, the Undersecretary at the Ministry of Sports Affairs, in a prize distribution ceremony attended by around 300 guests, including all 183 competitors.

Superb sailing venue, says ILCA chief:

Tracy Usher, the International Laser Class Association (ILCA) president, thanked Oman Sail for successfully hosting the event.

''We have discovered a superb sailing venue and we have enjoyed warm Omani hospitality well beyond our expectations. I also thank the volunteer members of the international jury and the International Race Management team for giving their time to help make this championship a success,'' he said.

''I thank the sponsors whose support is vital to the running of these events and a special thank you to the government of Oman, whose vision in creating and promoting sailing in Oman has made these events possible and has brought Oman into the spotlight of international sailing."

''We leave with fond memories and look forward to returning to enjoy your hospitality.''

Jeff Martin, ILCA general secretary, said, ''This event and the Laser Standard World Championships before it have both gone off very
