(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Recognising the central role of science, technology and innovation in economic development, the United Nations Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD) is reviewing Oman's national innovation system.
The Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (STIP) review is looking into the sultanate's strengths and weaknesses, and marking strategic developmental priorities to strengthen its innovative performance. The review will act as a reference for the creation of the National Innovation Strategy which is aimed at gearing Oman towards a knowledge based-economy as well as greater global competitiveness.
The review is being led by experts from UN bodies working in close consultation with the National STIP Review Group comprising Omani experts. The first fact-finding mission took place in April where a day-long discussion with the National STIP Review Group was held
The second UNCTAD delegation is currently visiting Oman to discuss the working draft of the report with national stakeholders. The Research Council is facilitating the STIP review and working in close consultation with stakeholders through a series of meetings, workshops and open discussions.
During this visit, UNCTAD officials will present the draft report on the outcomes of the first visit, which contains an exhaustive analysis of sultanate's innovation components and performance considering the indicators of the Global Innovation Index for the country. Also, the current visit will focus on the potential alternative sectors for Oman's economy.
