Marie Nammour / 9 December 2013

The incident happened the shop in the Al Baraha area in Al Muraqqabat following an altercation between the Emirati accused and the victim.

A 19-year-old unemployed boy is facing an attempted murder charge for stabbing another teen several times in the chest and back after a brawl in a mobile phone shop.

The incident happened on April 28 at the shop in the Al Baraha area in Al Muraqqabat following an altercation between the Emirati accused and the victim, also Emirati. The case has been referred to the Court of Misdemeanours and the defendant stood trial in the Court of First Instance.

An Indian salesman at the shop confirmed having seen the defendant involved in a fight in his shop with a number of other teens.

"I got out for a while and when I came back I saw them engaging in a physical fight. I don't know who initiated the attack. I told all of them to get out and I don't know what happened after that," the salesman said.

The stabbing victim's brother, 18, said the defendant went mad after a customer in the shop asked him whether he was interested in buying a second-hand smart phone. "The defendant replied by saying that he wanted a brand new mobile phone."

In his statement, the victim's brother said the accused used bad language when talking about people who sold used mobile phones. "He repeated the bad words twice." The Emirati customer who was talking to the accused was taken aback by the latter attacking him and then taking a knife out of his pocket. "My brother and others stepped in to break the fight," he said.

As they rushed outside the shop, someone fired tear-gas at the victim's brother and he lost sight for some time. He knew later that his brother had been stabbed by the defendant and he was rushed to hospital for treatment. The defendant admitted in the investigation that he stabbed the victim in his chest and back.

The forensic report showed that the stab wounds the victim received were deep and could have been fatal had he not been rushed for medical treatment.
