UAE - Man offered bribe to annul fine, court hears

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A manager, who allegedly offered a Dh500,000 bribe to a Nakheel sales executive to cancel millions of dirhams in fines and dues, stood trial in the Court of First Instance on the charge of offering a bribe to a public employee. The 32-year-old Iranian national was arrested red-handed on July 30 from the lobby of a hotel in Al Suffouh area in Jebel Ali as soon as he handed over Dh400,000 as a 'down payment' in return for some documents stating that fines worth Dh11.5 million had been cancelled. The Nakheel sales executive, a 40-year-old Colombian, said his job was to collect dues and debts to Nakheel by investors. "During a meeting held in May, the defendant, with another man, on behalf of some investors, asked us to cancel fines cumulated on three plots totalling Dh11.5 million. An Emirati director turned their offer down and told them that she would sue them." A few days later, the defendant met the executive again at Nakheel and offered to pay him Dh200,000. "He said he was the son of a plot investor and offered the money in return for cancelling the fines. I told him that his request was illegal and that I would think about it," the sales executive said in the investigation. The executive reported the defendant to Nakheel administration and consequently a complaint in this regard reached the State security. At the behest of law enforcement officers, the executive bargained with the defendant to pay him Dh500,000 for the favour. A police officer said they arrested the defendant around 11.50am at a hotel after he handed over a suitcase filled with money and took an envelope with documents stating that the fines were annulled. A police lieutenant testified that they were informed about the defendant trying to bribe a Nakheel executive to cancel fines on some plots in the Jumeirah Village project.
