(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) The changes in the industry include the growth of big data and cloud computing, the spread of social networking and increasing prevalence of smart devices.

Etisalat's investments in advanced technologies have positioned the operator to take advantage of changes in the nature of the industry, especially in emerging markets, paving the way for healthy returns in the years ahead, Khalifa Al Shamsi, chief digital services officer of the Etisalat Group said on Sunday.

"Etisalat's long-term strategy has put the company in prime position to benefit from the changes that are enveloping telecoms," he said.

"These range from setting up the digital services unit to investing in partnerships with product and service innovators - all of which are enabling us to develop and deliver the best products to our customers at the right time."

Al Shamsi was speaking at the Telecom Review Summit with the theme "It's all about Networking", held in Dubai.

He said changes in the industry include the growth of big data and cloud computing, the spread of social networking and increasing prevalence of smart devices. He said more and more customers want to be connected anytime and anywhere through secure, highpeed connections, and "they will not settle for anything less".

Etisalat's Digital Services Unit is an innovative branch of the company designed to drive best practices across the group's international footprint and develop innovative solutions. Focuses of the unit include commercial services, digital entertainment and machine-to-machine, a technology which is growing in prominence to become an essential part of the telecoms business model.

Al Shamsi said: "Etisalat views the changes in the industry as an opportunity. That's why we have set up the digital services unit, investing in advanced solution in cloud, M2M technologies and commerce services."

Etisalat's mobile commerce solution, Flous, has already begun to spread throughout its international footprint and local communities are benefiting from it, he said.

By contributing to economic development through products such as this, etisalat will become a part of the fabric of society and ensure customer loyalty in the years ahead. Al Shamsi stressed the importance of mobile operators to work side-by-side with governments to improve the ICT agenda and solutions for the region.

"Etisalat is reaping the awards of a long-term and flexible strategy," he said.
