User education critical for MNP: Du

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company is all set and "excited" for the launch of mobile number portability, or MNP, in the UAE, but amid all the hype, the firm is more concerned on an even bigger aspect: letting consumers what it is all about. In the lead-up to the launch of the long-awaited MNP, the telecommonucations company popularly known as du held an informative telecom knowledge session, in which top officials gave their insights and said what is to be expected once MNP goes live in the UAE on, as per schedule, December 22. "MNP is all about offering freedom of choice to telecom users. Under the guidance of the TRA [Telecommunications Regulatory Authority], MNP presents a landmark initiative for the UAE's telecom sector," said Ahmed Mokhles, executive vice-president of du's Consumer and Digital Business. "The UAE is ready to launch this significant step, and we are confident that it will have myriad positive implications for not only the nation's telecom sector, but for the country as a whole and the economy, too." "In launching MNP, the UAE will join a rich history of 75 countries and 15 territories in the world that offer this superior level of choice to telecom customers," said Carin Johansson, du's MNP Commercial Programme Manager. "Since it was introduced in Hong Kong in 1995, number portability has opened new doors for telecom operators across the world, and it will now provide UAE customers with a new level of choice." Johansson, one of the world's leading experts in MNP, has worked with du for over six years regarding this programme. "This project is my baby," she told the session. "It's like after carrying it for six-and-a-half years, I'm finally going to deliver," she quipped. Johansson also explained that du has taken and will be taking all the necessary steps to ensure that the mechanics of the system will go smoothly. The sessions were attended by members of the UAE's media, key bloggers and social media activists. Mokhles and Johansson spoke with the attendees to raise awareness about the mechanics of MNP, discussing what it is, what it means for customers, and why it matters for the UAE. Best practices of MNP worldwide, success criteria and how it is being implemented in the UAE were also covered.
