Royal Oman Police steps up patrols after attacks on expatriates

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The ROP has stepped up patrols following complaints about expatriates being attacked in several areas of the city, according to a senior officer. A special team, comprising sleuths from the intelligence unit and anti-crime department, are also working on tip-offs received in this regard.

In a recent incident, an Indian expatriate was attacked by miscreants while he was on his way back from Wadi Kabir. ''I was walking back home at around 7.30pm, when someone pushed hard me from behind and I fell on the pavement, hurting my back. When I turned around, I saw a young man. I retaliated by slapping him. The man then snatched my mobile phone from my hands. In the meantime, four of his friends also appeared from nowhere. I got scared and somehow managed to snatch my phone back and ran for my life,'' said the expatriate, who did not wish to be named.

He added, ''They pursued me till a distance. I don't know what was their motive but I felt may be they wanted to steal my phone and could have taken my wallet as well.''

This was one of the many instances in the last few months where expatriates have been the target of violent attacks. In the last week of October and the first week of November, more than a dozen cases of airgun attacks have been reported in areas around Ruwi, Wadi Kabir, Amerat, Al Khuwayr, Seeb, Al Khoudh and Al Hail.

The ROP arrested two accused in their 20s on November 5 when they were roaming around with an air gun while on the lookout for a victim in Al Khuwayr.

An expatriate, Binu Nagappan, 31, was shot at on his back in Seeb. ''It seems the attackers were tracking my movements,'' he said.

In a similar incident, Nagarajan C was attacked near Lulu Hypermarket in Bausher on October 13. ''All those who were injured are from South Asian nations,'' said Nagaraj
