Best of the industry honoured at awards


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)  The third annual Global Islamic Finance Awards, or Gifa, took place in Dubai late on Wednesday, in conjunction with the World Islamic Retail Banking Conference. Attended by the finest practitioners the industry has to offer and honourable dignitaries from across the world, the event marked an industry milestone and watershed. Prof Humayon Dar, chief executive officer of Edbiz Consulting, the organiser of the Gifa, said: "Gifa honours the agents and institutions that contribute to the Islamic banking and finance industry." "To become a $1.63 trillion industry in 40 years testifies to the phenomenal efforts of financial institutions, governments and scholars to build the industry almost from dust and sustain it in an ever-burgeoning global village." The commencing speech was made by the Crown Prince of Perak, Raja Nazrin Shah. His message to the audience was one of hope; Islamic finance is still young and still needs time to mature. "The Gifa is about growth; the industry needs to keep looking up and pushing forward, and each year the Gifa will celebrate those... that have contributed significantly to the growth of the industry," said Rizwan Malik, manager at Ebdiz Consulting. A total of 24 awards handed out.
