H E Toobi to speak on MECA roles at Oman's Majlis A' Shura session


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) H E Mohammed bin Salim bin Said al Toobi, Minister of Environment and Climate Affairs will speak at a public session about his ministry's role and challenges at the Majlis A' Shura's fourth and fifth regular sessions of the third annual sitting (2013-14) of the seventh term on Sunday and Monday.

Sheikh Ali bin Nasser al Mahrouqi, Secretary General of the Majlis A'Shura said the session will be chaired by Khalid bin Hilal al Maawali, chairman of the Majlis A'Shura.

Sheikh Mahrouqi said that during these sessions, the Majlis A'Shura will listen to the statement by the minister and discussions of members. He said H E Toobi will review the contents of his statement before the Majlis, which will include discussion on the delay and the length of procedures of issuing permits by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs (MECA).

The statement also includes MECA's role in issuing permits for projects and to major industrial areas like Sohar Industrial Port, Duqm Industrial Zone besides follow-up and evaluation of their operational impacts on the environment.

The minister will talk about MECA's efforts in combating industrial pollution, emissions from stone crushing sites and quarries, and landfills, besides elaborating on environment-related regulations.

The minister's statement will also include details of solutions to problems like land degradation, desertification, preservation of wildlife and pastoral areas, protection of shores, waste management and oil pollution, as well as the challenges MECA faces.
