(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The pedestrian was killed on the spot and the driver quickly fled the accident scene and tried to board a flight at the airport The Dubai Police arrested a man at the airport shortly after he allegedly killed a pedestrian in a hit-and-run accident, a top prosecutor revealed. Salah Bu Farroucha Al Felasi, the Dubai Traffic Chief Prosecutor, said that the man, a 31-year-old Brazilian, admitted during interrogation that he was under the influence of alcohol when he ran over a British man, 29, who was crossing a road in Al Sufouh area early on Saturday. The pedestrian was killed on the spot and the driver quickly fled the accident scene and tried to board a flight at the Dubai International Airport about three hours later. But thanks to the swift action of the Dubai Police officers, the man was arrested before fleeing the country. "He was caught shopping at the Dubai Duty Free shortly before taking a flight to Lebanon," the chief prosecutor said. Fortunately, a Lebanese man, who witnessed the accident as it happened, wrote down the driver's car registration plate number and called the police. Al Felasi pointed out that the accused breached the law by driving recklessly while drunk and by fleeing an accident scene. During investigation, the Brazilian admitted that he drank alcohol before the fatal accident. Dubai Attorney-General Issam Issa Al Humaidan has given his instructions for the Traffic Prosecution to go ahead with the necessary legal procedures. The driver, who has been placed in provisional detention, will be referred to the Traffic Court once the investigation is concluded and after reviewing all the relevant technical reports.
