Algeria food imports fall to USD709m in Oct.

(MENAFN) Food imports of Algeria registered a drop last month in comparison to the same month last year, Xinhua reported. The country's food imports fell from USD850 million in October 2012 to USD709 million last month, recording a 16.59 percent drop. The drop in food imports was mainly due to a decrease in sugar imports to USD26.17 million from USD33.65 million in the prior-year period. Imports of food products comprise 17 percent of the North African country's total imports. Total imports last month dropped from USD5.43 billion to USD3.93 billion. Last year, the country's total imports came at USD47.49 billion, registering an 8.4 percent fall from 2011 when imports reached USD9.02 billion.
