Oman tops Global Cybersecurity Index across region, Morocco stands second

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman, represented by the Information Technology Authority's (ITA) Oman National CERT, has been ranked first on the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) in the region with 0.765 points.

This was revealed in the latest International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and ABI Research. Morocco followed Oman with 0.559 points, among 22 countries in the region and Egypt took the third place with 0.500 points.

This was announced at the ITU Telecom World 2013, held  at IMPACT Exhibition and Convention Center in Thailand from November 19 to 22, stated a press release.

According to a press release, GCI is an initiative to determine each nation's cybersecurity capabilities. Dr Salim Sultan al Ruzaiqi, CEO, ITA said, ''I am proud of this achievement which is  going to drive the sultanate to be one of the leading countries on the global cybersecurity platform.''

The study identified 17 performance metrics with five categories such as legal, technical, organisational measures, capacity building, and cooperation.

''Being the first ITU regional Cybersecurity centre, Oman National CERT  is working hard to maintain its international standards. Achieving the first place is always fulfilling, but maintaining it is the challenge and that will be our task from now on,'' said Dr Ruzaiqi.

The sultanate's participation in ITU Telecom World 2013 is part of the ITU Cybersecurity initiative.

The visitors were given  a brief about Oman CERT, the regional centre. An interactive session with stakeholders, highlighting the current services and achievements to promote international cooperation was also held.

The release said that the four-day ITU Telecom World 2013 showcased the latest in information and communication technology.  The event was attended by several head of states, ministers, policy makers and regulators, vendors, service providers, and content developers, UN agencies and international organisations.

ITU Telecom World 2013 was held under the theme 'One Conversation that Matters', added the release.<
