9 dieas rains in Oman leave trail of destruction


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Nine people, including a prominent physician, were reported dead and a 60 year old from Bidiyah was missing due to rains and thunderstorms across Oman over the weekend, ROP and the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance (PACDA) said.

Around 200 rescue operations were carried out as teams from ROP, Royal Army of Oman (RAO) and Royal Air Force of Oman (RAFO) spread out across wilayats to help people trapped in the floods.

Officials said that the dead included seven Omanis. While three deaths were reported on Thursday, six died on Friday. Prominent physician Dr Marae Hassan was trapped inside his vehicle when it was swept away by swirling waters in Sohar on Thursday.

Divers

An ROP team, with help from citizens, rescued 25 passengers of a bus trapped in the flooded Wadi al Amairi in Ibri. ROP's aviation teams helped a number of trapped people from Wadi Sinainah in Buraimi, Wadi al Miri in Dhahirah, Wadi al Auwaisyah and Wadi Masrooq in Ibri, and a wadi in Musannah.

Extensive damage to infrastructure across governorates has been reported. The weather cleared up considerably on Saturday as the Directorate General of Meteorology and Air Navigation confirmed that the area of low pressure, which had led to unstable weather, has moved on.
