Japan, US Begin 4th Round of Trade Talks


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Delegates from the Japanese and the US governments have begun their 4th round of trade negotiations in Tokyo. The discussions are taking place at the same time as the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks being held in the United States, according to Japan's (NHK WORLD) website Acting Deputy US Trade Representative Wendy Cutler said many challenges remain for the negotiators But she said she hopes to make significant progress on major issues The US is expected to renew its call for Japan to ease its fuel efficiency regulations for vehicles such as hybrid cars Washington wants to promote exports of American cars to Japan The negotiators are also expected to discuss a special system that allows the US to temporarily raise tariffs when imports of Japanese cars surge Japan is not likely to amend its regulations easily But a deal of some kind is needed to conclude the TPP agreement.
